Southern Cross Road now named Constitution Avenue

Southern Cross Road now named Constitution Avenue
The President Jioji Konrote speaking at the Constitution Day celebrations.

The President today celebrated the first Constitution Day by declaring that Southern Cross Road becomes Constitution Avenue.

President Konrote says it will remind the people of the importance of the Constitution in the people’s lives and democracy.

He says it is to commemorate the day the Constitution first came into place.

He says that although the celebrations were limited to Suva, they plan to make a fixture on the national calendar.

Konrote says that it is also a double celebration because it is also the first State occasion to be held in the new Albert Park Pavilion and Grounds today.

He says that they look forward to many more such events in the future.

Meanwhile President Konrote says that the Constitution may be the supreme law, it is not a document that is collecting dust.

He then asked students present at the event to read a part of the Constitution.

Meanwhile the Celebrations started this morning with a march from the flea market to Albert Park.

Students from Natabua High School Band, RFMF Marching Band , Police Marching Band , Xavier College, Chinese Youth Group and the National Youth Band accompanied hundreds of people in the march this morning.

Students from different schools also made speeches about the constitution.
