Some companies paying workers below National Minimum Wage Rate

Calls have been made for the Ministry of Labour to take urgent action against some companies who have been short-paying their staff and paying workers below the $2 an hour National Minimum Wage Rate.

Fijivillage has received information from reliable sources that a company that has variety shops in Suva, Nausori, Nakasi and Nadi is allegedly underpaying its workers.

We have received reports that the employees are working from

7.30am to after 7pm from Monday to Saturday.

However the Manager is allegedly telling the workers that they should only sign in and sign off showing that they are only working 8 hour shifts.

The workers are paid $80 after FNPF deductions for 6 days although they are working about 72 hours per week.

This means that they are paid just over $1 per hour which is way below the current National Minimum Wage Rate of $2 per hour.

The Manager has threatened the staff not to take the matter to the authorities as they will lose their jobs.

Fijivillage has been reliably informed that the Ministry of Labour has been informed about this incident.

We have sent questions to the Labour Ministry asking them what is being done about these types of cases.

Stay with us for developments.
