Some Primary schools allowed to charge more than $10 fees-Bole

Education Minister, Filipe Bole has today confirmed that some Primary schools in the country have been allowed to charge more than $10 fees for a child for a term.

Bole said the Primary schools who have submitted their audited accounts with clear justification on why they have to charge a higher amount of fees, have been allowed to go ahead with their current school fees structure.

He also confirmed that these schools will continue to get the $30 per child government grant.

Bole said all the Ministry wants is that the school committees do the right thing and do not charge exorbitant fees for no reason.

He stated that schools that have the justification and breakdown of fees will get the Ministry approval.

The Minister stressed that approval letters from the Permanent Secretary for Education for charging higher fees must be shown to parents for evidence.

Bole has also reminded school management and head teachers that all students are to remain in school according to the policy of the Ministry of Education.

Meanwhile the President of the School Managers Association, Govind Singh said proper analysis should be done to find out the true cost of providing education to a Primary School student.

Singh said the government grant should also be reassessed.
