Smoke under control in most parts of Vunato dump – Lautoka City Council

The smoke has been brought under control in most parts of the Vunato rubbish dump in Lautoka, after it was deliberately set on fire by trespassers.

Concerns were raised by residents that the thick smoke lingering over parts of the city is having serious health impacts.

In response to questions sent by fijivillage News, Lautoka City Council Special Administrators Chair, Taitusi Rasoki says that at the moment, there is no evidence of any health issues, except the complaints through the media.

He says that a team from the Council will be dispatched to the affected areas so that they can determine the extent of any health issues.

Questions have also been sent to the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Environment.

They are yet to respond.
