Shop owners taken to task

Three traders in Suva have been booked for forcing customers to buy groceries if they want to buy sugar.

This has been confirmed by Commerce Commission Chief Executive, Bobby Maharaj who said that the traders will now be taken to court which will decide the appropriate penalty.

When questioned by Fijivillage News on what action can be taken against supermarket owners who are not putting sugar on the shelves, Maharaj said for as long as sugar is available at the retail end, there isn’t any problem.

However if the supermarket owners keep the sugar in the bulk area only, then it becomes an issue for the Commerce Commission.

He said that they are closely monitoring the situation and any trader found in violation of the provisions under the Commerce Commission Decree 2010 will be taken to task.
