Fiji’s renowned dance group Shobna Chanel is hoping to showcase Fiji’s culture on the global stage as they will be representing Fiji at the prestigious International Dance and Music Festival next week.
Speaking to fijivillage News, a member of the team, Patricia Niumataiwalu says Fiji stands as the sole Pacific nation to be part of this global event.
Another member of the group, Shalini Prasad says it is a huge honour and responsibility for each one of them to represent Fiji on such a large platform.
Prasad says they are not just representing Fiji but the entire Pacific region and they take pride in representing Fiji’s values, resilience, hospitality and unity, both as a group and as a country.
Meanwhile, Shama Kumar says they would be presenting a mix of traditional and contemporary Meke, along with a fusion item blending multiple genres which includes a fire dance from Samoa.
She says their contemporary performances will incorporate movements from various Pacific Island cultures.
Aisake Malupo says apart from choreography led by team leader Shobna, all the dancers contribute to welfare, communication, logistics and teamwork, which has helped build a strong bond within the group.
Malupo says the tour will take the group to several cities in India, including New Delhi, Lucknow, Paragranth and Pune.
