Second phase of dredging works at Sigatoka River starts
Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy

In an effort to reduce flooding in Sigatoka, Minister for Waterways Dr Mahendra Reddy has commissioned the second phase of dredging works at the Sigatoka River.

Reddy highlighted that in the last 30 years, Sigatoka experienced frequent flooding with the 2009 floods being the worst in Fiji’s history.

He says in 2010, dredging works initially started at the Sigatoka River due to its shallowness and continuous flooding during cyclones.

The Ministry of Waterways has budgeted $4.65 million for the second phase of dredging works and 750,000 cubic meters of sand will be dredged from the river.

The project will protect Fijians from related damage caused by flooding and sea level rise due to climatic events.
