Schools still facing teacher shortage

Some schools in the country are still facing teacher shortages and it is not known how long it will take the Education Ministry to solve this problem.

The Education Ministry has confirmed that some schools have shortages due to the continued movement of teachers and retirement.

The ministry confirmed that a number of rural schools have experienced low enrolments for this term, resulting in the school being downgraded with surplus teachers redeployed to bigger schools.

In the central division, schools such as Vunimono Sanatan College and Koroqaqa Indian School are facing teacher shortage problems.

Nasinu Sangam School in Narere also faces this problem with a kindergarten teacher being told to oversee class 1 students after the licensed teacher was transferred to Kadavu.

The Education Ministry categorically denies that locating some of the replacement teachers is proving to be difficult and according to the ministry, there are sufficient numbers of qualified people available for recruitment.

The ministry said school heads will need to control their intake and limit their class numbers to 40.
