The Digicel Fiji Sevens Team’s hopes of ending their 12-year losing streak in the Dubai Sevens did not eventuate this morning when they lost to Samoa 24-21 in the semifinal.
It was Fiji who started on a high with a try to Nasoni Roko under the posts for Emosi Vucago to convert and they enjoy a 7-nil lead.
Samoa came back strongly with two tries before Roko scored his second try and Fiji lead 14-12 at halftime.
Samoa again opened the scoring in the second half to lead 19-14 before Miti Nacagilevu scored under the posts for Fiji to lead 21-19.
In the last minute of play Samoa kept the ball in hand to score the winning try to deny Fiji’s hopes of reaching the final.
Manager Sale Sorovaki said they have themselves to blame for allowing Samoa to come back into the game.
Sorovaki added that the new boys in the team played well in their first outing and they are expected to improve in the next tournament.
In the second semifinal, England beat New Zealand 19-14.
In the final England beat Samoa 29-21.
Looking at the other results, South Africa beat Australia 19-12 to win the Plate, Argentina beat Zimbabwe 21-0 in the Bowl final and Kenya thumped France 26-nil to take home the Shield.
