Villagers of Rokovuaka in Ra will soon have a new evacuation centre to help them during floods and cyclones as the Rokovuaka Multipurpose Evacuation Centre is progressing steadily and nearing completion.
The new Centre is aimed at significantly improving the safety and resilience of rural communities in times of future disasters.
The facility will serve as a safe shelter for villagers during disasters and function as a community hall for day-to-day gatherings and development activities.
Another evacuation centre that is a step closer to completion is the Vatukuca Multipurpose Evacuation Centre in Vatukuca Village in Cakaudrove.
The footing works for the Centre have been completed, with the contractor now carrying out flooring works.
Vatukuca Village is highly prone to floods and cyclones.
Once completed, the facility will serve as a safe shelter for villagers during disasters and function as a community hall for day-to-day gatherings and development activities.
The two projects are made possible through funding support from the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and implemented through the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Fiji, in partnership with the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management.
