Ro Filipe says Fiji Sun report on MSAF matter misleading

Ro Filipe says Fiji Sun report on MSAF matter misleading

By Iliana Biutu
27/10/2025

Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau has clarified that the Fiji Sun headline on Saturday on the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji was misleading and referred to a matter that has already been resolved.

This relates to the suspension of MSAF Chief Executive Officer Joweli Cawaki.

The report alleged that Ro Filipe had defied the Prime Minister's order.

Ro Filipe says since Cawaki remains suspended, he is urging Goundar Shipping to respect the legal process.

He also stressed that the responsible minister has the authority to question recommendations concerning public safety and reminded maritime operators to follow proper procedures.

Ro Filipe adds that the Government remains confident in MSAF’s ability to uphold maritime safety and accountability.

We have sent questions to Fiji Sun.

They are yet to respond.

Prime Minister is yet to respond as well.
