A new Commissioner’s Local Orders for the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Services is now in place and according to authorities it is aimed at rehabilitating prison inmates.
Spokesperson Josefa Matau said they are focusing more on rehabilitation than containment of prisoners.
The Commissioner’s Orders for the Corrections Services also has the use of firearms by authorized prison officers in certain situations.
Matau said these are for extreme situations and is in accordance with the Corrections Act 2006.
