A record one-day rise in the number of new coronavirus cases around the world has been recorded.

The World Health Organisation says 307,930 confirmed infections were reported over 24 hours.

Restrictions banning social gatherings of more than six people have come into effect in England and Scotland.

In France, officials say they are running out of hospital beds for patients.

Israel has become the first country to announce it will reimpose a second nationwide lockdown later this week.

Authorities in 214 countries and territories have reported about 29.1 million COVID-19 cases and 925,000 deaths since China reported its first cases to the World Health Organisation in December.
