Opposition Leader, Sitiveni Rabuka

Opposition Leader, Sitiveni Rabuka has confirmed that he and SODELPA MP, Adi Litia Qionibaravi will not be part of the Parliamentary Privileges Committee meetings to look into the incident involving National Federation Party President and MP, Pio Tikoduadua personally attacking Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and the alleged incident of the Prime Minister confronting Tikoduadua within the parliamentary precincts on August 9th this year.

The first meeting was called by Committee Chairperson, Veena Bhatnagar at 1pm yesterday however only the government members Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, Inia Seruiratu and Alvick Maharaj attended the meeting. Rabuka and Adi Litia did not show up.

When questioned by Fijivillage on their non-attendance, Rabuka explained they do not have a majority in the Committee and they also do not want to be part of any processes that would prejudice the outcome of the case which has been reported to police.

He adds if there was a motion for the matter to be discussed by the Privileges Committee, it should have come from a Member of Parliament.

He further says that he has written to the Speaker of Parliament explaining why they did not attend the Privileges Committee meeting.

Meanwhile Bhatnagar refused to make any comments in relation to the absence of the Members of Opposition in the committee meeting or whether the meeting had gone ahead as planned. She says details will be revealed later.

The meeting is expected to go ahead as a quorum will be reached without the presence of Rabuka and Adi Litia.
