International raider, Al Riffa is the favourite to win the 165th Melbourne Cup with one punter so certain, he parted with AUD$500,000 at the annual Call of the Card last night.

There were chaotic scenes at Flemington Racecourse at punters sprinted through the gates, with a few racegoers coming unstuck.

The races are underway at Flemington, with Tornado Valley winning the 1000m Maribyrnong Plate for trainer Ciaran Maher and jockey Ethan Brown.

There were some drama with second-placed Tales of Time, ridden by Ben Melham, protesting Tornado Valley’s victory, claiming alleged interference at the 500m mark.

The protest was dismissed.

The big day finishes with the 10th race at 4pm.
