Police have today confirmed that they do not want any BBQ sellers or hawkers next to the footpaths or near the entry point of the Vodafo9ne Arena as many people then flow onto the main road due to the congestion during major events like Fiji Showcase.
Director of Operations, Rusiate Tudravu said that this is a major safety concern and the practice needs to stop now.
Tudravu said that the Suva City Council gives the hawkers permits but they should ensure that the stalls are put away from near the footpaths and the entry points to avoid the disruption of the movement of members of the public.
Tudravu said that he understands that the permits may be given on humanitarian ground but the hawkers should be allocated space away from the footpath and the main road.
The hawkers are currently setting up their stalls at Laucala Bay.
SCC's Special Administrator Chandu Umaria has just told us that they will be working closely with police to ensure that road side vendors do not block the foot paths or entry points.
He added that they will also be monitoring traffic with police to ensure pedestrian safety.
