A New Zealand court has been told NZ Police secretly recorded a man whose wife was suspected of killing a baby in Christchurch.
Fijian babysitter Shayal Upashna Sami is on trial for murdering a 1‑year old baby in January 2015 and she has denied the allegations.
The baby’s father, Dev Chand told the court that he observed Sami with his daughter for two days before employing her, and said there were no problems before the baby's death.
Chand worked as a bus driver and said Sami was recommended as a babysitter by one of his colleagues, Nilesh Ram who is the husband of the accused.
The court was told that about a week after his daughter's death, police asked Chand to secretly record Ram to gather evidence.
Chand agreed and said that he met with Ram to discuss the baby’s death while wearing a secret recording device.
Defence lawyer Jonathan Eaton told the court the purpose of the meeting was to get Ram to "tell the truth" about what happened.
The police monitored the conversation nearby.
The court heard that Ram backed his wife's story that the baby fell off a couch.
Chand told the court that Ram was "trustworthy".
The trial is expected to take two weeks.
