Police have cordoned off a central Auckland street after reports of a suspicious bag.
Armed police blocked both ends of Galway street, near Britomart train station, where a backpack lay on the road.
Inspector Ross Barnaby said the backpack was left outside a hotel.
Local businesses nearby have been evacuated
The police are heavily armed after the tragic incidents in Christchurch.
Surrounding streets remain open and buses in the area are still running.
