People have been urged to prepare themselves in advance and store water as the Water Authority of Fiji has planned a water shutdown from 7am this Saturday till late Sunday to Monday morning for parts of the Central Division.
The General Manager Operations, Taito Delana said upgrading work on the Waila Treatment plant will start at 7am and works are scheduled for up to 10 hours.
He said once works are completed, a further 24 hours will be required to replenish the reservoirs and during this time water will be shut down in all areas in Nausori, Tailevu, the Rewa delta, Nasinu and parts of Suva.
Delana said water trucks will be carting water to affected areas and 40 tanks will be placed in many areas including hospitals, churches and main intersections accessible to all however he said people should store water to avoid problems.
He said since its construction in 1982, the Waila Treatment Plant has never been refurbished and is barely keeping up with the demands of supplying the growing population in Nausori to Nasinu area and parts of suburban Suva.
He said the upgrading work will increase the production capacity at the treatment plant and in turn increase supply to the reservoirs and homes as well. Delana said they have a $23million budget for the whole upgrading process funded by ADB.
For the Suva/Nausori corridor, areas which will be affected will be Tailevu, Rewa, all areas on the Nausori end of the Rewa Bridge along and around, Nausori Town, Nausori Airport, all areas along Ratu Mara from LDS church in Koronivia up to Tamavua village to Raiwai and Raiwaqa, Ragg Avenue, Princess Road, New Town, Vatuwaqa, Fletcher Road, USP, Sakoca and Cunningham Road. All areas in between will also be affected.
