Phil Mickelson has made history as the oldest winner of a golf major tournament, closing out victory in the US PGA Championship this morning.

Mickelson, who turns 51 next month, held on for a two-shot victory in the final round at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina.

The previous oldest major winner was Julius Boros, who was 48 when he won the 1968 PGA Championship.

Mickelson led Brooks Koepka by one shot entering the final round, and stretched his advantage to five after the 12th hole.
