People with disabilities are under-represented in Fijis workforce - Kamali

According to the statistics from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics from 2023 to 2024, only 0.8 percent of the workforce was represented by people with disabilities, which is a major underrepresentation.

That is the message from Manager Advocacy and Corporate Communication, Gaylene Kamali, as she says people with disabilities are under-represented in the workforce in Fiji, and the objective of the Workshop on Labour Rights and Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in Fiji, with tripartite partners, is to promote and ensure their labour rights and inclusion are adhered to.

Kamali notes this is a good start to collaboration.

She says a lot of work needs to be done by various stakeholders and partners to strengthen this, and she is positive that actionable changes will be made moving forward after this workshop.

Kamali says this stigma runs in silence, and people need to openly champion disability and break the silos of the stigma.
