PNG's government is urging calm and a return to normal after the unrest caused by the attack on parliament on Tuesday.

Papua New Guinea's capital fell into the grip of unrest as security force personnel stormed the national parliament.

Shortly before MPs were to debate the new national budget, hundreds of members of the country's disciplinary forces converged on parliament, before some broke into and vandalised parliament, demanding payment for work during last week's APEC summit.

The Finance Minister James Marape has personally addressed the security forces after the commotion at parliament saying that the entitlements were now being processed.

Radio NZ says the Commissioner Gary Baki is likely to announce an investigation, or inquiry.
