PDP to go back to the people on common name
Adi Sivia Qoro and Felix Anthony

The People’s Democratic Party has said it will go back to the people to ask them if the common name for all the citizens of the country should be Fijian.

PDP’s Deputy Leader Adi Sivia Qoro said while a common identity is good, the people who owned the name should be properly consulted.

She confirmed that a PDP led government will ensure that this is done.

When asked on what is the PDP’s stand on every citizen now called Fijian, the party’s leader Felix Anthony and his deputy Adi Sivia Qoro said this is something that the people should decide.

Anthony said the PDP will also reinstate the Great Council of Chiefs.

However, the party cannot give full details on how constitutional changes will be made.

According to the 2013 constitution, all citizens of Fiji shall be known as Fijians.

You can only change the constitution if three quarters of the members of parliament and three quarters of the registered voters agree to a change.
