Over 70 people turned up at My Suva Park this morning to take part in Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary Walk-A-Thon.

The Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister, Yogesh Karan says the Walk-A-Thon is to remember the life of Mahatma Gandhi who walked 15km everyday protesting against the British movement because of salt taxes.

Gandhi walked almost 400km from March till August in 1930.

Over 70 people walked from My Suva Park through Muanikau Road, Ratu Cakobau Road, Vuya Road, Queen Elizabeth Drive and returned to My Suva Park to complete 4.5km of the walk. They were also picking rubbish in these areas.

Karan says the Walk-A-Thon is also about staying fit and healthy in the sense that Gandhi had put a lot of effort into fighting for India even at the later stages of his life.

Karan adds that if people are able to understand Gandhi's three life principles which are to see no evil, hear no evil, and speak no evil, they will achieve so much.

He says people are now doing the opposite.

Karan also encouraged the people to look after their health and make use of the Nasese seawall area adding he was a regular walker there but did not see many people on a regular basis.

He says people take their health lightly and when it is too late they say that they should have done this or done that.

Around $500 was collected in this morning's Walk-A-Thon and funds from this event is an appreciation of Gandhi's contributions to various nations.
