Minister for Education Premila Kumar says a number of schools were flooded during widespread flooding in parts of the country earlier this week and teams are currently trying to clean and prepare it for classes.

During her visit to schools in Sigatoka, Kumar says the recent floods has caused a lot of problems for our schools and 51 schools are currently being used as evacuation centres.

She says they have also received requests from certain boarding schools regarding students living in hostels.

Kumar says there was one request from the Saint Teresa of Lisieux College in Sigatoka where students only go home at the end of the school term.

She adds the school was farming to feed the boarders however the farms were destroyed because of flooding.

The Minister says she is grateful to the District Scout Commissioner and his team for coming forward and providing food for the students.
