Prime Minister, Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama today made a strong statement to the Naitasiri Provincial Council that the government will now appoint the chairpersons of all provincial councils.
While opening the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting in Kalabu village today, Commodore Bainimarama said he has noticed that previously some chairpersons who were against the government delayed developments for their province.
He said this needed to stop.
Commodore Bainimarama had already confirmed to Fijivillage that the tikina representatives in the councils will no longer elect their chairperson.
Commodore Bainimarama also told the Naitasiri Provincial Council representatives that the Great Council of Chiefs had to be abolished due to increased politics in the GCC.
He also said that the GCC was formed by the colonial administration and nothing much has changed in the last 5 years when the GCC did not have any meetings.
The Prime Minister said life remains normal for the iTaukei without the GCC and the traditional roles and responsibilities are not affected at all.
