NZ waives diplomatic immunity for government worker in Fiji

There is confirmation that the New Zealand government has voluntarily provided an immunity waiver to allow one of its employees to provide a statement to the Fiji Police to assist in an investigation into the death of 26-year-old Josataki Narube in Suva.

When questioned by Fijivillage, the NZ High Commission in Suva confirmed that they are liaising with Fijian authorities regarding an incident involving a NZ government employee in which a Fijian person was injured.

The NZ High Commission says the local person has since died in hospital and the NZ High Commission has extended its sympathy to the grieving family.

It says New Zealand is grateful for the cooperation extended by Fiji Police and will continue to offer cooperation.

Meanwhile Police have forwarded the matter for an inquest by a magistrate.

26-year-old Narube was found lying unconscious outside an apartment complex in Suva.

He was found by a worker at around 7am on the 31st of last month.

Narube was rushed to the CWM Hospital where he was on life support machine.

He passed away on the 1st of this month.

The inquest is to determine whether there was any criminal element in the case.

Narube died due to injuries sustained from the fall from the apartment.
