The National Farmers Union is calling on the Fiji Sugar Corporation to make the final cane payment for the 2021 crop season before Diwali as most growers do not have savings to draw from for such celebrations.

Union General Secretary, Mahendra Chaudhry says the final cane payment for the 2021 season crop is due this month.

He says they have received numerous calls from their members requesting if it can be made before Diwali.

In a letter to the FSC CEO, Bhan Pratap Singh, Chaudhry says as Diwali falls on 25th October this year, they will be grateful if the payment is made by Friday or earlier.

Questions were sent to the Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Industry, Voreqe Bainimarama, Permanent Secretary, Yogesh Karan and the FSC CEO last Thursday. They are yet to respond.
