NFA urges Govt. to invest in fire safety for schools

John Wesley Primary and College students safely evacuated

The National Fire Authority is calling on the Government to put some urgency in terms of investing in fire safety for schools after a fire broke out this morning at John Wesley College.

The fire, which has been contained, destroyed the school’s Home Economics classroom and adjacent classrooms.

NFA CEO Sowane Puamau says it was unfortunate their tanks arrived late, however, the children are safe.

Puamau says he has been urging the Ministry of Education to put some urgency on investing in the school properties.

He says they can see that none of these schools are insured and asks who will pay if such incidents occur.

Meanwhile, students of John Wesley Primary School and John Wesley College have been safely evacuated.

According to the school, they believe that the fire could have been started by some students burning rubbish or smoking on school premises.

Staff members acted swiftly to ensure all students were safely evacuated to the designated assembly area.
