Murray chosen to be part of Constitutional Commission

Human rights and constitutional expert, Professor Christina Murray has been chosen as the second overseas member to be part of Fiji’s five member Constitutional Commission.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has made the announcement today which means that the final Fijian member of the commission is the only appointment yet to be made.

Professor Murray originally from South Africa, is a Professor of Constitutional and Human Rights Law at the University of Cape Town.

She is currently a Senior Fellow at the US Institute of Peace in Washington DC.

She has taught and written on a number of areas of law, including human rights law, particularly relating to gender equality, violence against women, and constitutional rights for women, international and constitutional law.

She most recently served as a member of the Kenyan Committee of Experts appointed by the Kenyan President to draft a new constitution of Kenya which was approved and promulgated in 2010.

Between 1994 and 1996 Professor Murray also served on a panel of seven experts advising the South African Constitutional Assembly in drafting South Africa’s final constitution.

The members of the Fijian Constitutional Commission already announced are Chairman, Professor Yash Ghai, Taufa Vakatale and Doctor Satendra Nandan.
