Minor accident affects hundreds of residents

Hundreds of people coming from Deuba, Navua, Wainadoi, Veisari, Naboro, Lami and Delainavesi to Suva were late to work and school in the Central Division this morning as we witnessed one of worst ever traffic jams along the Queens Highway.

Hundreds of cars were stuck in the traffic jam just after 7.30 this morning and it took about 2 hours to deal with the problem.

The traffic jam was caused by a minor accident which involved a vehicle hitting the back of a van near the Tamavua i Wai Bridge close to the Delainavesi Police Post.

The accident occurred just past 7.30 this morning and reports from the ground confirm that the vehicles were taken to the Lami Police Station after 9am.

Questions are being raised by many people on why a minor accident caused a huge traffic jam that lasted for about two hours.

We have raised the issue with the Police.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro says Commissioner, Ben Groenewald is reviewing the processes that take place when officers attend to minor accidents.

Naisoro says they have to follow the full process at the moment which includes taking measurements, assessing the situation, calling a tow truck and then clearing the road.

Commissioner Groenewald will make the necessary decisions on the procedure in due course.
