Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and FijiFirst MP, Mereseini Rakuita Vuniwaqa

Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation and FijiFirst MP, Mereseini Rakuita Vuniwaqa has resigned from FijiFirst citing personal reasons and new opportunities as the cause for her resignation.

A Government statement says the Government wishes her all the best in her future endeavours.

Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau has been notified of the resignation under section 63(2) of the Constitution.

Given her resignation from FijiFirst, Vuniwaqa’s seat in Parliament is now vacant.

The Government says consequently, a replacement for the position of Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation will soon be announced.

Her replacement in Parliament will be determined by the Electoral Commission as provided for under section 64(1) of the Constitution.

We had sent questions to Vuniwaqa on Wednesday after information received that she is likely to resign to take up the UN Women Executive Director post. She has not responded.

Meanwhile FijiFirst candidate, Sachida Nand is next on the list to come in to fill the vacant parliamentary seat. This will depend on the Electoral Commission's decision.
