Man to serve 6 months in prison for brutally assaulting girlfriend

A 24‑year‑old man has been given a partially suspended sentence by the Suva High Court for brutally assaulting his girlfriend in Nasinu in January this year.

The man was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.

Six months of the sentence has been suspended for 3 years.

This means the man will only serve 6 months in prison.

The man suspected that the girlfriend was having an affair and slapped and punched her on the face several times.

He also used a stick to assault the girlfriend by hitting her hands with it.

The man also used a USB cable wire to hit the woman on the face two or three times.

It was heard in court that the woman got multiple bruises on her hand, chest, legs, and back.

She also got bruises on her face.

In his sentence, High Court Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge said resorting to violence aimed at resolving domestic issues has become a big problem in Fiji.

Justice Aluthge said the court must demonstrate that it will not tolerate any kind of domestic violence and that it will come down harshly on violators.
