Man sentenced to 12 years for raping cousin with mental disability

A 34-year-old man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for raping his cousin who is unable to engage in intellectual conversations.

The case was called before High Court Judge Justice Daniel Goundar via Skype from Labasa High Court.

The incident happened on the 10th of February last year in Taveuni.

After drinking kava, the man had gone to the 27-year-old woman's house to have dinner.

He found the woman alone with another sibling who also has intellectual disability.

He then proceeded to have intercourse with the woman in the presence of her sibling.

Justice Goundar told the court this was a case of sexual exploitation of a woman with mental disability.

The man has been sentenced to 12 years with a non-parole of 8 years.
