Man sentenced to 12 months for threatening to kill his wife

A 35‑year‑old man has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by the Nausori Magistrates Court for threatening to kill his wife in September this year.

He was charged with one count of Criminal Intimidation.

The court heard that the man threatened his wife by saying that he will kill her by chopping her to pieces, pack her and send the pieces of the body to her mother.

It was also heard that the man said he was not afraid of the police.

The man pleaded guilty to the offence.

Resident Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne said the aggravating factors are that this was domestic violence and abuse of trust and power.

He said the mitigating factors are that the man is 35-years-old, is seeking forgiveness and is also remorseful.

Magistrate Somaratne said the man submitted that he has reconciled with the wife and she also confirmed that in the court.

The man committed the offence while he was on a suspended sentence.

Magistrate Somaratne said the man did not consider that his wife is pregnant and carrying his baby in her womb when he made the remarks.

For the safety of the victim, a permanent domestic violence restraining order has been granted.
