A 57-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Labasa High Court for raping his niece.
Judge Justice Daniel Goundar stated that the 17-year-old girl had gone to reside with her uncle in a village in Labasa to attend school.
The man raped the girl on 30th August and 30th October in 2008.
The man told the girl to accompany him to the cassava plantation where he threatened the girl and raped her.
Justice Goundar stated that the man threatened to commit suicide and used his authority to sexually abuse the girl to prevent her from complaining.
