A 21-year-old man who was convicted of rape has been sentenced to 10 years and nine months imprisonment by the Labasa High Court.
The man had lured his 12-year-old cousin into a farm house and raped her sometime in 2016 in Labasa.
Judge Justice Daniel Goundar stated that the rape of a child is so disgusting that a punishment must be imposed to mark the community’s outrage against such crimes.
He adds that sexual violence against children by their relatives is too prevalent in the society.
A non-parole period has not been set as the accused’s prospect of rehabilitation is high.
