A man who tried to burn his brother’s house after a dispute in August 2020 in Nasinu has been given a 12 months prison sentence.

High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Goundar says taking into consideration the 3 months Aman Chand had been in remand, the remaining term for him to serve is 9 months imprisonment.

Justice Goundar says he has considered suspension and decided not to suspend the sentence in order to give effect to the principle of deterrence.

The Judge further states Chand was drunk and that he breached the trust of his brother who gave his flat for him to reside rent free.

Justice Goundar adds that the court has a duty to send a clear message that setting fire with the intention to burn down a dwelling house to resolve family disputes will not be tolerated.
