Man gets 3 years imprisonment for setting his cousin’s house on fire

A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to 3 years imprisonment for setting his cousin’s house on fire following a fight during a drinking party.

The incident happened in March this year in Visama, Nausori.

While sentencing Anare Turaga, High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Goundar says after the fight the victim apologized but Turaga refused to accept the apology.

He says Turaga was furious and threatened to harm his cousin with a knife and continued to the challenge the victim for a fight.

The following morning, the victim left his home for a trip to Suva and when he returned, his house on fire.

His three bedroom home and its content were destroyed.

The total cost of loss was $64,000.

A non-parole period of 18 months has been set.
