A man in his 30s has passed away after he was swept away by strong currents while trying to cross a flooded bridge near Naimasimasi Village in Serua last night.

The man was travelling with others in a carrier and when they approached the Wainikavou bridge, they were advised to wait for the water to recede as the driver did not want to take the risk of crossing the flooded bridge.

The farmer who was allegedly intoxicated at the time, tried to cross the flooded bridge and was swept away.

Police say the body of the farmer was found in the Naqase river following joint search efforts by officers and villagers.
