Man charged for allegedly hacking dog to death in Labasa

A man has been charged and brought to court for allegedly hacking a dog to death in the Naleba School Compound in Labasa last month.

37-year-old Joel Prakash Chand has been charged with one count of injuring an animal.

According to the Crimes Act, a person commits a summary offence if he or she wilfully and unlawfully kills, maims, or wounds any animal or bird capable of being stolen.

The offence carries a penalty of five years’ imprisonment.

Chand has been granted bail by the Labasa Magistrates Court.

The matter has been adjourned to the 3rd of October.
