The Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji Archbishop Peter Loy Chong says a person with mental health issues threw a piece of block at the statue of Mother Mary located in front of the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Suva.

Archbishop Chong says the incident happened yesterday and the head of the statue broke and fell off.

He adds the CCTV recorded this incident.

Archbishop Chong says while this incident is a concern for Catholics, he is asking Catholics to be compassionate to the man who may not really know what he is doing.

He says Father Cecil Williams has told him that a generous Catholic has already offered to buy a new statue of Mother Mary.

Meanwhile, Police have confirmed that the man is in custody as investigations continue.
