The ship MV Spirit of Altruism which belongs to Patterson Brothers Seaboard Shipping Company Limited hit a reef earlier this morning and has been stuck just past Levuka for more than an hour now.

Bua College Principal Raman Lal says they have been issued life jackets and have been told by the Captain of the ship that a ship is coming from Nabouwalu to rescue them.

The ship left Natovi at 7.30am today for Labasa.

Meanwhile, Spokesperson for Patterson Shipping David Patterson says the MV Spirit of Altruism is on top of the Cakau Davui Reef and is in a stable condition.

He confirms that there are 132 passengers with 8 vehicles that are on board the ship.

Patterson says the MV Spirit of Love together with the MV Spirit of Harmony have gone to stand-by and will reach within half an hour.

He says the ship had engine problems and drifted to the reef.

Patterson says they are now investigating the incident.

This is a developing story.
