MH fire could have been disastrous for Nadi Town - NFA
A major fire which destroyed the MH Supermarket in Main Street, Nadi Town, early this morning could have been disastrous for Nadi town.

National Fire Authority CEO John O’Connor said they were called at about 1.30 this morning and when they arrived, the building was already engulfed in flames.

O’Connor, who was at the site early this morning, said due to the magnitude of the fire, firefighting was difficult and challenging.

He said heat emitted from the fire could be felt on the opposite side of the road at Jacks Handicraft.

He said the Nadi, Nadi Airport and Lautoka Fire and Rescue teams responded to the fire.

O’Connor said their main focus was to stop the fire from spreading to RB Patel Supermarket, Sharma’s Centre, ANZ, Prouds, Jacks Handicraft and other nearby businesses in the Main Street.

However, O’Connor said there are no reports of injuries or fatalities and there is about 80 to 90 percent damage to MH supermarket.

The jobs of about 55 people have been affected.

The NFA CEO is again urging business owners to ensure that they take extra care and they must ensure fire safety procedures are followed at all times in their business properties.
