Local books, stationary not under price control-PIB

The Prices and Incomes Board said that imported text books, exercise books, imported stationary and curriculum development unit books are under price control however local books and stationary are not under price control.

PIB is currently having its price control inspection of books to see that the books under the price control are sold at the recommended prices.

According to PIB, the local books and stationary not under price control can be sold at a price suited to the Retailer and not much can be done in this matter.

PIB said the decision to have local books and stationary not under price control was made in 1992 to encourage local stationary businesses to manufacture books locally.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry is calling on retailers selling school books and stationary to be considerate of families facing difficulties in buying school material for their children.

Minister Filipe Bole said although the price of books and stationary not under prices control are determined by retailers, however retailers should look into the plight of poor families now as many people are already facing financial hardship due to Cyclone Mick.

First term of school starts from next Tuesday.
