Light earthquake occurs near Matei Taveuni

A light earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter Scale occurred at a shallow depth source of 8 kilometres at a location 74 kilometres North East from Matei, Taveuni earlier tonight.

The quake occurred at about 8.46pm, and it was felt along the Vanua Levu area.

The Mineral Resources Department's Seismology Unit says the quake does not pose any immediate tsunami threat to the region.
