Let the voices of the students be heard – Education Minister
Education Minister, Doctor Mahendra Reddy

Let the voices of the students be heard.

Education Minister, Doctor Mahendra Reddy said all the plans have been drawn up for this Friday to ensure that students around the country speak in their classrooms about suicides.

Doctor Reddy said they will spend the first half of the day doing this with the teachers.

A nationwide pledge by students is also being planned for Friday.

Doctor Reddy said packages have been put together and something constructive has to be done.

Doctor Reddy believes that the planned programme will have a positive effect on all the students.

He said there are more than 900 schools in the country and they are getting external speakers who include counsellors, NGO representatives and church leaders.

Doctor Reddy calls on members of the public to go to the nearest school on Friday if they want to provide any assistance.

There have been 89 suicides and 80 attempted suicides so far this year.

Police say there is a suicide or attempted suicide report in Fiji every one and a half day.
