Lawyer tells court that truck driver has been wrongly charged

The lawyer of the 33-year-old truck-driver who allegedly murdered a 16-year old boy in Nakasi last Thursday has told the Nasinu Magistrates Court that his client has been wrongly charged by the state.

Roderick Chand has been charged with one count of murder.

His lawyer, Matthew Young told the court that Chand was reversing his truck when it allegedly went over the victim.

Young says police should have charged Chand with dangerous driving causing death.

He adds there was no intent in that.

Chand has also revealed in court that he was assaulted by inmates at the Nakasi Police Station.

He says he has been threatened that he will be further assaulted if he is remanded.

It is alleged that while reversing his truck, Chand hit the boy who was sitting along the common driveway last Thursday.

The boy was found in a pool of blood that morning.

The case will be called again on Wednesday for the bail ruling.

Chand has been remanded in custody.
