Minister for Education, Premila Kumar says she met with the Minister for Health, Dr. Ifereimi Waqainabete and the Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr. James Fong on Monday and it seems they can open schools on 4th January next year.

However, Kumar says this is subject to vaccination rates. An announcement is expected soon.

While speaking at Votualevu College, Kumar also revealed that a large number of teachers are stranded in Viti Levu and they will be slowly making their way to Vanua Levu and the maritime islands.

Kumar says they are trying to facilitate their travel as inter-island shipping services are resuming soon.

The Minister for Education has also urged teachers and heads of schools to pay more attention to students when they come back to school.

Kumar says children are the most affected during this pandemic particularly the teenagers who feel their academic year has been ruined and nothing is normal.
