Land, one of main trump cards used by greedy politicians

Land has been one of the main trump cards used by greedy politicians which have in turn led to indigenous Fijians becoming poorer.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama made the comments at the Kadavu Provincial Council meeting yesterday, saying one of the biggest myths brought about by past politicians, is that Fijians will lose their land and therefore must not give it away.

He highlighted sugar cane leases which were not renewed due to the misconception that they will lose their land.

Bainimarama told the members of the Council, there was never any concrete proof given to indigenous Fijians that they would lose their land if the lease was not renewed, however politicians took advantage of their popularity and twisted the truth which benefitted only themselves.

The Prime Minister added that this has resulted in a lot of sugar cane farmers moving away and as a result a lot of land is lying idle.

Bainimarama also stressed that indigenous Fijians need to make wise decisions and not be easily lured by people who may try to take advantage of our natural resources to make a quick buck.
